Beaches on Lake Ontario remain closed today

Swimming areas at three Lake Ontario Beaches remained closed today.

According to the Monroe County beach information line, visitors will not be allowed to swim at Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte today because of a high water flow from the Genesee River, heavy rain from Saturday’s storms and elevated bacteria levels in the beach’s swimming area.

Swimming at Durand Eastman Park is not yet permitted during the week. The beach will open for seasonal daily swimming on Saturday.

Both Rochester parks are open for all other activities.

The swimming area at Hamlin Beach State Park also remained closed today because the water temperature is 54 degrees, which is far too cold to allow swimmers in the water, according to park officials. The beach will reopen once the water temperature warms to at least 60 degrees, according to park officials.

To check on water conditions at Monroe County beaches, call (585) 753-5887.

To check on Hamlin Beach, call (585) 964-2462.
