| Mountains: The artists who fight for the Niagara Escarpment (October 19 2009) Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, Living at the Barricades | October 19th, 2009 | | One of the busiest organizations on Lake Ontario right now is a volunteer group that goes by the name of PERL – Protecting Escarpment Rural Land. PERL is the leading voice for the protection of the Niagara Escarpment from the Nelson quarry expansion near Burlington, Ontario. In the last month, PERL has thrown a fundraising concert featuring Sarah Harmer and Great Big Sea. They hosted a reception to announce the Mount Nemo declaration, which calls on the Province of Ontario to protect this precious natural area. PERL and its members are also attending a series of four public meetings, making presentations to local councils and the conservation authority to encourage them to oppose the Nelson quarry expansion. On this episode of Living at the Barricades, we talk to Sarah Harmer and Roger Goulet. We explore Mount Nemo. Poet Tanis Rideout gives a reading. Music in this show:
- I’m a Mountain by Sarah Harmer
- Upward Over the Mountain by Iron and Wine
- Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
- w/ Nemo by New Tango Orquestra and the voice of Tanis Rideout
