Lake Ontario Waterkeeper receives funds to participate in Darlington new build

It was announced today that Lake Ontario Waterkeeper is to receive $71,100 in funding for our participation in the review panel for the Darlington new nuclear build project.

The Project is a proposal by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to construct and operate up to four new reactors with a total capacity of 4800 MW on its Darlington nuclear site located near Oshawa, Ontario, along the north shore of Lake Ontario. Several reactor technologies are being considered for the purposes of the EA. Construction and operation of waste management facilities are also being examined.

There was $150,000 available for participation in Phase II of the review and the following organizations also received funds:

  • Clarington Board of Trade ($15,000);
  • Northwatch Coalition for Environmental Protection ($18,427);
  • Safe and Green Energy Peterborough ($37,000); and
  • Mouvement Vert Mauricie ($14,400)
