| Fire in Hay Bay marsh Aimee Pianosi, Napanee Guide | March 7th, 2010 | | Firefighters from Napanee and Dorland stations of Greater Napanee were called out just after noon today to a marsh fire on Hay Bay. It was contained in the area bordered by Cty. Rd. 9, Benn’s Point Road, and Galt Street. Acting fire chief Ian Shetler said on the scene that the cause was undetermined, and they would begin investigation later in the afternoon. Smoke was visible from Highway 401, and by about 2 p.m., most of the flames had died down. Firefighters used hoses with water pumped through a hole in the ice using a generator to douse the cattails ahead of the flames. Property owner Hugh Sharpe, who lives at the end of Benn’s Point Road, said he had seen fires in the marsh before, but this covered area than any in his memory. |
