“Dam” concerns in St. Catharines!

Not everyone is happy with the power-generation dam being proposed in the Garden City.

St Catharines Hydro Generation wants to put the dam near the downtown core on 12-Mile Creek, which flows north towards Lake Ontario.

That area of 12-Mile Creek is used by hikers and paddlers, and is home to species such as the American eel.

An organization called the “Lake Ontario Waterkeepers” says the dam will have a bad impact on the eel, which is an exotic species eaten by humans, and is also an important part of the food supply for Great Lakes fish.

The organization feels that their concerns have not been addressed during the planning process for the dam.

Among the recommendations being made is an eel-ladder, to allow the eels to get around the dam.
