Public meetings focus on drinking water sources

The Trent Conservation Coalition Source Protection Committee and the Quinte Conservation Source Protection Committee are inviting public comment on their respective Draft Proposed Assessment Reports. These reports provide the scientific foundation for the development of source protection plans.

The public is invited to learn more at a number of public meetings.

For the Quinte Conservation Source Protection Committee the meetings are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a presentation at 7. These meetings are scheduled for:

Monday, June 7 at Quinte Conservation, 2061 Old Highway 2 near Belleville;

Tuesday, June 8 at the Royal Canadian Legion, 347 Main Street in Picton; and

Wednesday, June 9 at the Kiwanis Centre, 137 St Lawrence Street East in Madoc.

For the Trent Conservation Coalition Source Protection Committee the meetings are from 3 to 8 p.m. with a formal presentation at approximately 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Their meetings are scheduled for:

Wednesday, June 23 at Baltimore Recreation Centre, 23 Community Centre Road, Baltimore;

Thursday, June 24 at Norland Recreation Centre, 7675 Hwy 35, (Ward Park), Norland;

Monday, June 28 at Stone Hall, 6713 Highway 7, Havelock;

Monday, July 5 at Cartwright Town Hall, 13940 Old Scugog Road, Blackstock;

Tuesday, July 6 at Rotary Hall, Stirling Grand Trunk Railway Station, Stirling.

Those attending the meetings can find out:

• Where their municipal drinking water source is;

• What area drains into these water sources;

• What types of land uses could pose a contamination threat if located in these areas; and

• What types of solutions are available to address these threats.

A copy of the Quinte study, called the Draft Proposed Assessment Report, is available for review at: the meetings, the Quinte Conservation office during business hours, and nine other locations, including eight municipal offices, all listed on the Quinte Sourcewater website at: http://www.quintesourcewater.ca. Written comments on the study are invited until June 18, 2010.

The Trent Assessment Report documents are available at: www.trentsourceprotection.on.ca Digital (DVD)copies are available at CA and Municipal offices and are also available for viewing during office hours at the Conservation Authority offices: Crowe Valley CA, Ganaraska Region CA, Kawartha Conservation, Lower Trent Conservation, and Otonobee Conservation. Written comments on the study are invited until July 9, 2010.

The initiative to protect sources of municipal drinking water is directed and funded by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Similar source water protection projects are being undertaken in other regions across the province. Conservation Authorities are community-based environmental protection agencies one of Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities.
