GRCA report shows no threats to Lake Ontario drinking water – Northumberland Today – Ontario, CA
June 25th, 2010

-Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority director of watershed services Mark Peacock told Port Hope council Tuesday evening about some of the early results from a Ganaraska Assessment Report carried out under the Drinking Water Source Protection Act for Clean Water.

The report deals with studying and developing policies for assessing and protecting drinking water quality and quantity.

Port Hope, Cobourg and Newcastle municipal water intake areas were analyzed.

Included in the study are how far out in Lake Ontario the pipes are placed, their depth, proximity to land and nearby land use.

In all three cases intake pipes are fed by river sources as well as the lake. The Ganaraska River in Port Hope and Cobourg creek in Cobourg empty into the lake.

The analysis, based on the factors of vulnerability, shows no significant threats or extenuating conditions that might threaten Lake Ontario drinking water, Peacock said.
