Olcott Beach reopened Wednesday afternoon thanks to funding for lifeguards. The “Beach Closed” signs were taken down by Niagara county workers and the beach is once again seeing beachgoers and swimmers. “Very pleased that it’s open. Kids are having fun playing in the water,” Dean Weaver, who drove with his family to Lake Ontario from Buffalo, said. “Beat the heat with the water and that’s something that every family wants to do. And the kids being off of school they really want to go swimming and enjoy the water as much as possible.”

It has been a warm summer so far with temperatures above average for most of July. “As you know it has been a hot summer and we could’ve used {the beach} earlier,” Newfane Town Supervisor Tim Horanburg said.

The supervisor says funding for lifeguards was finally approved so now this beach can be open for the rest of summer. “It’s been a little complicated due to funding reasons but the county finally came up with funding to do this,” Supervisor Horanburg said.

Lifeguards are now lining the beach, keeping a watch on swimmers. “Make sure that everyone stays within the confined swimming area marked off by the ropes and that no one goes beyond it because it drops off pretty quick…and the rip current too,” Tim O’Brien, an Olcott Beach lifeguard, said.

The beach will be open for the rest of summer from 11am to 7pm each day.
