| MARMORA — Reeve Terry Clemens wants the entire community to show its support for the Northland Power hydroelectric project. Council passed a motion at its council meeting last week to spend $5,000 on a marketing campaign to help bring Northland to the community. Since Northland made a presentation proposing a $660-million hydro power station project at the abandoned Marmora mine site, the community has already shown “overwhelming” support, Clemens said. Several businesses have proclaimed support on billboard signs and the municipality has received letters from residents. “Yesterday I signed 71 letters to send to MPs and MPPs” and other municipalities, Clemens said, adding he strongly believes an advertising campaign will help “convince the world this municipality needs this project.” He proposed everything from lawn signage to T-Shirts and bumper stickers to promote the project. Northland was to meet with Hastings County Council Thursday and is to meet with the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus July 15. Clemens also announced The Toronto Star was to visit Marmora and Lake next Tuesday. “It’s all very positive news,” he said. “When The Toronto Star rolls into town it would be nice (for them to) see everyone with signs in their windows.” Council plans to get the campaign underway quickly. Residents are also being urged to continue to send letters of support to the municipal office.
