Free fishing derbies

Two free fishing derbies run through the Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire organization are trying to encourage children to enjoy the benefits of recreational fishing.

Members of the Napanee Ontario Provincial Police will be on hand to ensure safety, and interact with participants.

The Loyalist Fishing Derby is taking place on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the United Empire Loyalist Heritage Centre and Park. The event is for children 16 and under.

Next week, on July 23, the Beaver Lake Fishing Derby will take place at the Beaver Lake Lions Park in Erinsville between 10 a.m. and noon.

Both events are free and do not require advanced registration.

Participants should bring their own personal flotation device, rods and reels. Worms and life jackets will be provided.

TRAFFIC CLOSURES, DELAYS

A number of downtown streets will be closed for the Buskers Rendezvous, including:

* Market Street from Ontario Street to King Street from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily until Sunday.

* Ontario Street from Brock Street to Clarence Street and from Clarence Street to Johnson Street from 2:45 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

* Princess Street will be closed from Bagot Street to Wellington Street from 12:45 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and from Division Street to Barrie Street from 9 to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Market Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays until Oct. 22 for the Kingston Public Market.

Division Street will be closed from Joseph Street to Russell Street until the end of July for road construction.

Union Street will be closed between Frontenac and Alfred streets until Sept. 1 for the construction of an underground tunnel between Goodes Hall and the parking lot below Tindall Field for Queen’s University.

PRISON HOSTS OLYMPIAD

Held annually at Collins Bay Institution, the Exceptional People’s Olympiad kicks off today.

For its 35th year, the inmate-organized event will host approximately 75 developmentally challenged men and women from across Ontario.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. Competition will continue into Sunday.

MILITARY MUSIC AT FORT

British military music will be showcased tonight at Fort Henry.

At 7:30 p.m., chamber brass and percussion ensemble Brasswerks and a hundred-person choir will perform on the parade square. The groups will be joined intermittently by the Fort Henry Drums and Drill Squad.

To cap off the evening, a fireworks finale will take place.

For guests arriving early, a barbecue service is available from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the performance area.
