Health unit warns of possible blue-green algae in Lower Buckhorn Lake, eastern Sturgeon Lake

The Peterborough County-City Health Unit is advising residents who draw water from the Island Drive area of Lower Buckhorn Lake, in addition to Crab Lake, to find an alternate water source following the discovery of a large quantity of algae.

The health unit said the algae resembles blue-green algae and is currently being tested by the Ministry of the Environment to confirm its identity.

Meanwhile the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit also reports suspected blue-green algae bloom was found in the eastern leg of Sturgeon Lake., resulting in the posting of Lions Park Beach in Coboconk as unsafe for swimming.

Beach Park, Riverview Beach Park, Sturgeon Point Beach, Centennial Beach in Verulam and Verulam Recreational Park beaches have also been posted.
