One out of two beaches open to swimmers

This week it’s safe to swim in Lakeview Beach East, but not Lakeview Beach West.

The health department, which regularly conducts testing on the beaches in the region, has ‘posted’ Lakeview Beach West this week, which means it’s closed to swimmers.

Because bacteria levels are above the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s standard of 100 E. coli per 100 ml of water, it’s not safe for swimming, the health department says.

Throughout the summer, bacteriological water tests are done to determine if beaches are safe for swimming.

Public Health Ontario’s laboratory in Peterborough provides analysis of all water samples submitted for testing.

Despite the A-okay to swim in the east side water, the region says the public should not swim in beach water for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall, as bacteria levels can increase due to run-off.
