Mississauga Article: Spill contained to creek
October 29th, 2011

Mississauga firefighters and the Region of Peel spill coordinators contained what they think is diesel fuel to the Cooksville Creek and have removed most of it by damming and diking it with absorbent materials.

Acting Platoon Chief Gary Rollins told The News they had a crew monitoring the water down near the harbour to make sure the spill wasn’t making its way into Lake Ontario.

Emergency and hazardous materials crews arrived at the scene this afternoon west of Cawthra Rd. on Lakeshore Rd. E. at around 5:40 p.m. after reports of a fuel spill.

Rollins said the spill was minimal with was no threat to animal or human life.

However, the Region of Peel spill coordinators are still trying to locate the source of the spill.

Rollins said the last place they were looking was storm sewers on Cawthra Rd. just north of The Queensway.

“It could be coming from a parking lot, the side of a road, or the side of building,” he said. “Storm sewers run in all those places and it will take a long time to figure out.”
