Great Lakes Nutrient Initiative: Way to Deal with Algae – French Tribune
October 11th, 2012

In order to understand more about algae and to take tackle the same, Canadian officials have announced a $16 million programme known as the Great Lakes Nutrient Initiative. The officials were of the view that their main aim will be to tackle algae in Lake Erie.

While citing the reason for the same, the officials said that the lake is quite vulnerable to algae, which is toxic in nature. They affirmed that the lake has been over-exposed to phosphorus, and this had led to additional presence of algae.

Though the efforts being made by the authorities concerned are quite appreciative, there are a number of experts, who think that much more is needed to get rid of the problem. Recently, the Columbus Dispatch unveiled that even if the main source of algae, which is phosphorus, is being controlled then also it will take two to four decades to clear the problem.
