This Thursday, Toronto artist Pamela Schuller will launch the Lake Ontario Water Project. The Project is a unique paper-mache mosaic that blends environmental awareness with arts education. More than 200 pieces of art, representing fish, plants, animals, and other waterfront sights were assembled and painted by grade 6, 7, and 8 students and community participants.<
Schuller, supported by Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and the Ontario Arts Council, began working on the project last fall.
"Just as Lake Ontario is born of the many rivers that feed it, the mosaic is born of the many people who create it," says Schuller. "The children learned that each small piece of art they create contributes to the success of the whole."
Centennial College will host the Lake Ontario Water Project until February 19. The mosaic will then travel to other civic centres such as Metro Hall and City Hall.
