August 23rd, 2010

Cooling off with a refreshing swim is one of the great pleasures of the Canadian summer. Unfortunately, as summer moves into its late stages, finding somewhere to go for a dip is becoming harder and harder. This past weekend, only four of 14 beaches monitored by Durham Region were safe for swimming. (That doesn't include the Rotary Park beach in Ajax, which is closed for... (more)

Potential threat
July 22nd, 2010

Industry and regulatory agencies insist there's no cause for public alarm about a plan to ship 1,760 tonnes of radiation-laced steel through Lake Ontario. The precedent-setting project, which requires approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, would see 16 radioactive steam generators, each the size of a school bus, shipped out of the Bruce Nuclear Generating... The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission says low-level radioactive steam generators, like the 16 decommissioned vessels Bruce Power plans to ship through the Great Lakes, do not present a risk to the public or environment. July 13th, 2010

A plan to ship 16 school bus-sized radioactive steam generators out of Canada via the Great Lakes -- and past Windsor -- is being attacked as a threat to our drinking water and health. "Worst-case scenario is this stuff breaks containment and gets spread throughout the Great Lakes basin," Derek Coronado, co-ordinator of the Windsor-based Citizens Environment Alliance said of... In June, Waterkeeper Mark Mattson travelled to the Southern United States Gulf Region to visit local Waterkeeper organizations working to Save Our Gulf from the ravages of the BP oil disaster. This is his account: The Gulf of Mexico is dying. This is obvious to anyone who visits the coastline in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or Florida. The blackened beaches, floating tar... (more)

June 29th, 2010

A 60-turbine wind farm proposed for the waters of Lake Ontario off Kingston may not get closer than five km to the city shoreline. The provincial environment ministry has recommended a five-km "shoreline exclusion zone" so that offshore wind projects don't interfere with drinking water intakes, fish and bird habitats or produce excessive noise near communities. "The new... (more)
