Development & Land Use (2845 articles)
In the last century, Southern Ontario has lost most of its natural wetlands to development and urbanization. Rainwater that was once absorbed by forests and fields now flows over pavement, collecting oil and salt from the roads, and carrying contamination into our rivers and lake. Construction sucks up groundwater from the springs that feed our rivers. Every land use decision we make will have impacts – large and small – on the future of our waterways.

Seaway officials will dig into a buried canal remnant in Thorold, after local explorers stumbled across a smelly yellow substance now identified as sulphur. Life’s a beach, as long as it has some water – Columns – Opinion – The Cape Breton Post
August 23rd, 2010

Most of us would agree that the essential ingredients of a beach are sand, water and sun. OK, maybe you don’t need the sun as much, just some warmth. I’ve had some fantastic swims in the rain. And perhaps you don’t need sand. I’ve laid my towel on rocks before, and it can be quite pleasant to bask in the sun on a large, warm, flat rock after a cool swim. But you do... (more)

Sugar Beach is one refined place – The Globe and Mail
August 18th, 2010

Sugar Beach opened this week at the foot of Jarvis, and I all I can say is, what a beach. Sort of. If you haven’t visited this sparkling waterfront gem, you should, because it may just be David Miller’s greatest achievement as mayor. It is, unfortunately, marred by a single flaw – namely, that its name is misleading to the point of fraud. But never mind that for now,... (more)
