Energy & Fossil Fuels (1492 articles)
Usually associated with air quality problems, the burning of fossil fuels can have disastrous impacts on water quality. Contaminants like mercury fall from smokestacks and build up in the food chain. Mercury pollution has affected fish in every region of the Great Lakes Basin. The plants themselves can create problems – intake pipes suck up fish, while cooling water discharges release hot water into the lake that affects the natural environment. It is important to remember that many industries on the Great Lakes generate power by burning fossil fuels, not just power plants. This category also includes articles about our energy system, including alternatives to fossil fuels.
