Farming (183 articles)
"Farming" is a broad topic, that includes both agriculture and aquaculture. Agriculture is one of the dominant land uses along the south shores of Lake Ontario, as well as in the Bay of Quinte region. While not all farming has negative impacts on Lake Ontario, factory farms – hogs in Ontario, cattle in New York State – have taken their toll in recent years. Aquaculture – fish farming – is more common in other areas of the Great Lakes but is a growing practice.

Algae blooms foul Great Lakes
August 16th, 2011

Bay City— The fun stops here, literally. Bay City State Recreation Area features a one-mile beach that runs south from its visitors center along Lake Huron's western shore. In reality, you can enjoy about 500 feet of it. Just south of the park's volleyball courts, the white sands turn into what locals call "beach muck" — a thick layer of washed-up algal growth and detritus... (more)

Dear FarmTech: Your ethanol plant makes us sad
July 5th, 2011

It's getting tiresome reminding people that Lake Ontario is awesome. It's important. It's precious. We need it. It's... (more)

It finally feels like spring: the sun is out, the crocuses are up, and temperatures are climbing above freezing. It is a time for new life and fresh starts. This spring, we would like to make a pact with you. Let's never again use the word "NIMBY". Why did Ontario kill public participation rights?
October 27th, 2010

It's been almost twenty years since Ontario established itself as a world leader in environmental protection. The EBR guaranteed public scrutiny of all pollution permits. It allowed the public (you and I) to... (more)

Misgivings about manure
July 9th, 2010

When I started writing stories about Great Lakes ecology in the late 1980s, an activist said something that sounded profound. Thinking back to the earlier, algae-choked days on Lake Erie, she said: "Today there's less sewage, but more poison."By poison, she meant synthetic chemicals with long, unpronounceable names, known by their initials (DDT, PCBs) or short forms...
