Currently, there are four nuclear power generation sites in the Lake Ontario watershed: Bruce Nuclear (on Lake Huron), Pickering, Darlington, and Oswego. There are also a number of manufacturing facilities associated with the nuclear industry, including Cameco in Port Hope and GE in Peterborough. Contaminated wastewater, air emissions, releases of hot cooling water, intake pipes, and waste all affect Lake Ontario’s natural environment.

PHAI conducting a trial survey – Northumberland Today – Ontario, CA

Thirty-five properties in Port Hope will soon be the subjects of a trial resurvey, Glen Case, manager of project engineering with the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) Management Office, told Port Hope council recently. Cameco's uranium dioxide (UO2) plant was voluntarily shut down on June 30 to investigate an exceeded an action level for uranium emissions, a press release issued July 15 by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) states. The federal government will no longer have to worry about Port Hope Harbour now that council voted four to three to accept the $8.8-million harbour property along with a cheque for $300,000. Bruce Power wants to ship sixteen radioactive decommissioned steam generators across the ocean to Sweden for repurposing. The parts of the generators that are "too radioactive to be recycled" will make their way back across the ocean to the Bruce nuclear plant for long-term storage.
