Eramosa karst discussed in Ontario legislature (Nov 29, 2011)
December 3rd, 2011

Mr. Paul Miller: My question is for the Minister of Infrastructure. In September, the former minister from Hamilton Mountain again said that the ecologically sensitive Eramosa karst feeder lands would likely be donated or transferred, for a nominal fee, to the Hamilton Conservation Authority. The main Eramosa karst lands, a rare geological formation of caves and sinkholes, were... (more)

Lake of Shame: Ontario’s pollution problem
July 12th, 2011

In the Huron language, Lake Ontario means Lake of Shining Waters. Stand on the crest of the slope on Jones Avenue, just below the Danforth, and, when the sun hits the water it’s like a mirror. But of all the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario, which is furthest downstream, is almost certainly the most polluted. This week, we invite you to join the Toronto Star's Antonia Zerbisias... (more)

This mega quarry is really, really big
May 4th, 2011

When Lake Ontario Waterkeeper heard about the proposal for a new mega-quarry in Melancthon Township, just outside of Orangeville, we weren't sure if we had the numbers right. As proposed, the quarry would occupy 937.1 hectares of prime agricultural land and extract water below the water table at depths of 60 metres (200 feet). Picture a 20-storey hole in downtown Toronto... (more)

Melancthon Quarry discussed in Ontario legislature (Apr 21 2011)
April 25th, 2011

Ms. Andrea Horwath: My question is to the Premier. A US-owned company wants to build North America’s second-largest open-pit mine next to the Niagara Escarpment and amidst the headwaters of rivers that provide drinking water for over a million Ontarians. Farmers, citizens, aboriginal people and environmentalists oppose this planned quarry, which will destroy thousands of... (more)
