The southern half of Durham Region covers the Lake Ontario shoreline from Pickering in the west to Clarington in the east. The population of the entire region is just under 600,000 people. The land is a mix of urban, suburban, and industrial development. There are a number of very large industrial and energy facilities in Durham, including Darlington nuclear power plant, General Motors Oshawa, and Pickering Nuclear power plant.

Cooling off with a refreshing swim is one of the great pleasures of the Canadian summer.
Unfortunately, as summer moves into its late stages, finding somewhere to go for a dip is becoming harder and harder. This past weekend, only four of 14 beaches monitored by Durham Region were safe for swimming.

Ontario would save money by replacing the aging Pickering nuclear station with electricity from renewable sources, says a coalition of environmental groups.

Lake Ontario has a dirty image and there's a reason for it.
The noticeable stench and visible algae turn most people away from the thought of taking a refreshing swim on a hot day in this Great Lake. But children are children and where there's water, they will play.

Delay in receiving copy from feds
OSHAWA -- The full wording of a long-awaited deal on Oshawa's waterfront is expected to be available to the public on July 28.
City and federal officials announced highlights of the agreement at a public meeting on July 16, but the document itself was not released.

OSHAWA -- Details of a confidential agreement between the City and the federal government on the Oshawa waterfront are expected to be released to the public the week of July 12.
