The southern half of Durham Region covers the Lake Ontario shoreline from Pickering in the west to Clarington in the east. The population of the entire region is just under 600,000 people. The land is a mix of urban, suburban, and industrial development. There are a number of very large industrial and energy facilities in Durham, including Darlington nuclear power plant, General Motors Oshawa, and Pickering Nuclear power plant.

Salt runoff ruining lakefront 'jewel'
PICKERING -- The salt spread on roads during harsh winter storms brings temporary relief to drivers racing down icy roads, but wreaks havoc on vulnerable ecosystems nearby.
