The Ontario Ministry of the Environment is investigating a possible petroleum spill in Shoreacres Creek at Nelson Park. The discovery of the unknown liquid in the creek was made by Antero Manninen, who noticed something was out of the ordinary on Monday. Life’s a beach, as long as it has some water – Columns – Opinion – The Cape Breton Post
August 23rd, 2010

Most of us would agree that the essential ingredients of a beach are sand, water and sun. OK, maybe you don’t need the sun as much, just some warmth. I’ve had some fantastic swims in the rain. And perhaps you don’t need sand. I’ve laid my towel on rocks before, and it can be quite pleasant to bask in the sun on a large, warm, flat rock after a cool swim. But you do... (more)

Sugar Beach is one refined place – The Globe and Mail
August 18th, 2010

Sugar Beach opened this week at the foot of Jarvis, and I all I can say is, what a beach. Sort of. If you haven’t visited this sparkling waterfront gem, you should, because it may just be David Miller’s greatest achievement as mayor. It is, unfortunately, marred by a single flaw – namely, that its name is misleading to the point of fraud. But never mind that for now,... (more)

Oil and fuel spilled in Don River – The Globe and Mail
August 18th, 2010

An oil and fuel spill in Toronto’s Don River has been contained, officials say. A underground storage tank was likely ruptured by a construction crew doing excavation work to build a parking lot near Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East, said Kate Jordan, a spokeswoman for Ontario’s Environment Ministry. After Sunday’s heavy rain, the contents of the tank –... (more)

Dropping sewer suit spared taxpayers a huge legal bill, Pickering says – thestar.com
July 31st, 2010

It all came down to money. Pickering’s mayor and councillors say they changed their minds about taking York Region to court over the Big Pipe sewer expansion because it could have put residents on the hook for millions of dollars. “I don’t think we’re gonna win, and the risk is too high for our taxpayers,” said councillor and longtime pipe opponent Bonnie... A front-row seat to evolution at your local stream
July 26th, 2010

The first thing to know about baby brook trout is that they are not devoted viewers of Disney. Not for them all the massed choreography of Finding Nemo, where entire schools of tiny fish move as one, virtually no member distinguishable from any other. Brook trout, it turns out, aren’t like that at all. From the earliest age, they start acting differently, a diversity of... (more)

Stand-up paddleboards gain popularity in Toronto
July 26th, 2010

It’s the closest thing to walking on water. But you’d better keep your balance, or your tranquil glide along Lake Ontario could end with a splash and a soaking. Stand-up paddleboarding is quickly becoming all the rage across the Great Lakes and gaining ground as the leisure sport of choice this summer in Toronto, over the familiar canoe and kayaks characteristic of... July 26th, 2010

PICKERING -- Protesters took to the streets of Pickering Saturday, complaining council's abandonment of the fight against the so-called Big Pipe doesn't meet the sniff test. "We thought the mayor was leading a fight on our behalf," demonstrator and mayoral candidate Maurice Brenner said as a group of residents, toting signs with slogans like 'Stop The Stink' and 'Stop York's... Pickering residents protest growing stink over sewer expansion
July 26th, 2010

The smell at Pickering’s city hall just got worse and it’s called secrecy, a group of 30 protesters complained at a rally Saturday over the York-Durham sewage system expansion project. Bad enough they’ll have York Region’s raw waste flowing through their community, worse that council changed its mind three weeks ago about fighting the region in court, said protesters... (more)
