Hamilton Harbour is one of Lake Ontario's most notoriously contaminated areas. Most of the rivers that once flowed from the Niagara Escarpment to Lake Ontario have been buried. The shoreline is very industrialized, dominated mostly by the steel industry. More recently, construction of the Red Hill Creek Expressway developed one of the last remaining greenspaces feeding Lake Ontario in the area. Hamilton Harbour is one of Lake Ontario's "Areas of Concern." The city and surrounding region are home to some half a million people.

Council wants fresh faces for air monitoring

The city is looking for private companies to monitor air quality during emergencies instead of relying solely on the Ministry of the Environment. Yesterday, council voted to put out a request for proposals to vendors who could check for toxins in the air after fires, spills or other crises. U.S. Steel Canada Inc. fined $150,000 for Black Fallout Discharge

HAMILTON – On March 2, 2010, U.S. Steel Canada Inc. pleaded guilty to one violation under the Environmental Protection Act for discharging a contaminant, namely black particulate, into the natural environment that caused or may have caused an adverse effect. Tire recycling plant planned for Hamilton
