Hamilton Harbour is one of Lake Ontario's most notoriously contaminated areas. Most of the rivers that once flowed from the Niagara Escarpment to Lake Ontario have been buried. The shoreline is very industrialized, dominated mostly by the steel industry. More recently, construction of the Red Hill Creek Expressway developed one of the last remaining greenspaces feeding Lake Ontario in the area. Hamilton Harbour is one of Lake Ontario's "Areas of Concern." The city and surrounding region are home to some half a million people.

Hamiltonians hoping to enjoy a cool dip in the city's beach waters will have ready access to them this Canada Day weekend.
Only Pier 4 and Bayfront Park harbours are closed, as the rest of the public beaches are listed as safe for swimming as the temperature heats up.

The city wants to block the province from developing environmentally sensitive lands near the Eramosa Karst.
