New York State is the only American state that borders Lake Ontario. Major cities on the U.S. side of Lake Ontario (the "south shore") include Rochester, population 220,000 and Oswego, population 18,000. Outside of these urban areas, the dominant land use on the south shore is rural, with many farms and smaller towns. There are two separate nuclear facilities here, at Ginna and Oswego.

Round gobies, an invasive, minnow-sized fish that exists in substantial numbers in Lake Ontario, have been discovered in Onondaga Lake by county workers.
The fish are considered a “pain in the neck” by many anglers, particularly bait fisherman.
