New York State (354 articles)
New York State is the only American state that borders Lake Ontario. Major cities on the U.S. side of Lake Ontario (the "south shore") include Rochester, population 220,000 and Oswego, population 18,000. Outside of these urban areas, the dominant land use on the south shore is rural, with many farms and smaller towns. There are two separate nuclear facilities here, at Ginna and Oswego.

GREECE — Standing on a stepladder 100 yards into a cattail marsh off Island Cottage Road, I've been given the honors of slamming a steel pole into the muck using a heavy-handled device called a rod-pounder. "Let's go, get the real experience," urges Peter Hofmann, the gregarious president of the Lake Plains Waterfowl Association, as I work up a sweat. "Looks good," says... (more)

PHOTO BY JEFF MARINI About two miles off the shore of Lake Ontario, the water's often so clear that a measuring device submerged 40 feet is visible from the surface. That's a major improvement from the 1970's and 1980's, when "if you could see down 10 feet,... (more)

It’s also important, as the lake’s sports fishing industry generates thousands of jobs and substantial economic spinoffs by pumping millions of dollars each year into the state’s economy. A 2007 statewide angler survey estimated that angler expenditures... (more)
