Port Hope and the surrounding communities are part of Northumberland county. Each town has a population under 20,000 people and boast some of the north shore’s most historic downtowns. Port Hope is home to a number of nuclear-related industries, which have historically contributed to unique water quality problems in the area. Port Granby radioactive waste site, just outside of Port Hope, is actually located in Durham Region. Information about this leaking waste site may be found in both categories on this web site. Port Hope Harbour is one of Lake Ontario's "Areas of Concern."
