Some 30-million Americans live in the Great Lakes, which are home to large cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Indianapolis. Land use in the Great Lakes Basin is a mix of rural, urban, and industrial. Historically, water quality on the Great Lakes has been influenced by manufacturing, waste disposal sites, electricity generation, and urbanization.

Blue-green algae is a very serious, very solvable problem

Cyanobacteria in our Lakes and Rivers across Canada and the US (better know as blue-green algae) is a very serious problem. It also a fairly common problem this time of year. Warm, still, stagnant water with too much nutrient will result in blue-green algae. There is a solution: make blue-green algae less common. How do you do this? Bad River band applies for new water standards because of mining proposal
