Swim (1987 articles)
Clean, swimmable beaches are one of the hallmarks of a healthy waterfront. Beaches are typically posted as unsafe when bacteria from sewage and stormwater pollutes the lake. In Ontario, beaches are supposed to be open at least 95% of the summer. This benchmark ensures that the lake is safe for human recreation and for aquatic life. Since 2002, Waterkeeper has monitored beach postings around Lake Ontario, publicized compliance records, and launched administrative appeals to the Ontario government.

July 26th, 2010

PORT HOPE -- The material dredged out of Port Hope's harbour each year is undeniably clean and reports prove it, says municipal Chief Administrative Officer Eugene Todd. Frustrated with being held to a different standard of sediment and soil testing, Mr. Todd plans to take the province to task on the issue that wastes times, costs money -- particularly this year's harbour... The smell at Pickering’s city hall just got worse and it’s called secrecy, a group of 30 protesters complained at a rally Saturday over the York-Durham sewage system expansion project. Bad enough they’ll have York Region’s raw waste flowing through their community, worse that council changed its mind three weeks ago about fighting the region in court, said protesters... (more)

July 22nd, 2010

Is it safe to swim in Lake Ontario? From June to September every year, we are asked this question more than any other. It seems to be the number one "environmental" issue on people's minds when the thermometre soars. We could answer the question with a "yes" and move on, but where is the fun in that? This summer, we want you to know everything there is to know about your... (more)

July 22nd, 2010

For a government so concerned with our well-being -- for example legislation limiting smoking in cars and even outdoors as well as cellphone use in cars and a whole ministry devoted to health promotion -- why is the Ontario government so slow to act to protect us at our public beaches? As noted in The Intelligencer Wednesday, public beaches across the province have lost... (more)
