Ontario marks Earth Day by eliminating environmental protections
April 21st, 2010

Have you heard about the Ontario government's "Legislative Framework for Modernizing Environmental Approvals"? This is a policy proposal that would see Ontario's most important environmental laws radically rewritten - and not in the name of clean air and clean water. Click here to read Waterkeeper's full submission Click here to listen to Mark and Krystyn discuss the issue... (more)

Case closed: Edwards vs DTE Energy
April 13th, 2010

Back in 2005, investigators from Lake Ontario Waterkeeper working with Scott Edwards discovered mercury contamination in the fish and the sediment of the St. Clair River. We had good reason to believe the mercury was coming from coal-fired power plants on the American side of the river, and we went to court to prove it. That case is now over. The St. Clair River is a... (more)

Cherry Beach waste site: Recommendations to protect local air quality
April 6th, 2010

Recently, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper wrote a newsletter about a waste site that Waterfront Toronto hopes to create near Cherry Beach. We expressed concerns that the site would occupy land in the heart of Toronto's waterfront revitalization zone for the next twenty years. We noted that much of the contaminated soil that would be stockpiled on the site contains contaminants at... (more)

Hamilton Harbour cleanup stalls, mess spreads
March 30th, 2010

Deep at the bottom of Hamilton Harbour, there is a creeping menace. It is a “spill in slow motion”, a toxic cocktail of coal tar, metals, and man-made chemicals. Formally known as “Randle Reef”, this slowly spreading stew of pollution has been a blight on Hamilton Harbour for a generation. Clean-up should have started in 2008, but it did not. The Reef is a mass... (more)

New St. Catharines dam will affect paddlers, eel
March 15th, 2010

A new dam proposed for St. Catharines, Ontario, could be one of Lake Ontario's first significant hydroelectric development projects in many years. The "Shickluna" dam, named for the famed ship-builder, would be a 3.5-5.5 MW dam across the Twelve Mile Creek in the heart of the city. (This is roughly enough power for 3500-5000 homes.) Lake Ontario Waterkeeper just commented on... (more)

Kingston’s old sewage woes; Canada’s new sewage rules
March 8th, 2010

We are just two months into the year 2010 and the City of Kingston has dumped the equivalent of 58 Olympic-sized swimming pools of sewage into Lake Ontario. The City has bypassed 29,526 m 3 from pumping stations (that's about 11 pools, if you're keeping track) and 118,747 m 3 from combined sewer outfalls (47 pools). The data is on the City's website if you want to review it.... (more)

Who wants an industrial waste site near Cherry Beach?
March 1st, 2010

It's not a rhetorical question: Waterfront Toronto is applying to the Ontario government for permission to create a waste site on Unwin Avenue, across the street from Lake Ontario Park, the outer harbour sailing and paddling clubs, Cherry Beach, and the Waterfront Trail. The waste site would stockpile contaminated soil pulled from the ground as part of the waterfront... (more)

First phase of wind power policy review is ending
February 22nd, 2010

Earlier this month, the public consultation period for the first phase of a Ministry of Natural Resources policy review drew to a close. The Ministry was soliciting comments from the public about four different policies and procedures that outline how the natural resources department should respond to wind energy development proposals: the Windpower Policy, the Windpower... Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure policies under review
February 16th, 2010

When they make decisions that affect the environment, most government departments in Ontario must consider our environmental rights. A provincial law known as the "Environmental Bill of Rights" says that certain ministries have to publish a "Statement of Environmental Values". This statement is a blueprint for the decision-making process that endeavors to ensure our air and... (more)
