Su Sheedy was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and now resides in Kingston, Ontario.
Since she began painting in 2001, Sheedy has marshaled her fascination with surface effects and her assured colour sense into a substantial art practice. Unsurprisingly, given the tactility of her work, she cites the art of Paterson Ewen and Cy Twombly as formative influences.
Sheedy’s heavily gouged and worked surfaces are punctuated by a profusion of colours or embedded objects. At times, Sheedy compounds the physicality of her paintings by incorporating materials such as carded wool, steel, wood, or flowers. As with all her encaustic work, a sense of immanence emerges from light snared in the many layers of wax. Her markings exsist as tangible forms, visual labyrinths, territories to be traversed without fixed plan or bearing.
Sheedy, 20 years a massage Therapist, remains interested in cellular memory, sensory perception, and our visceral response to texture. These expressive surfaces are not intended to be understood as actual landscapes but rather conjure near abstract residual settings, shifting and diagrammatic, evoking gestalt union of aggressive line and organic symmetry. Her subject matter being texture itself.
Sheedy’s work has appeared on TV shows, Movies, and Documentaries. She has taught workshops and given lectures in her medium. She has been Chief hanger and Adjudicator in several Art Exhibitions and is represented by Muse Gallery; Toronto, Terence Robert Gallery; Ottawa, Whistler Village Art gallery; Whistler, B.C., and Agnes Etherington Art centre, Kingston, Ontario.
